APPLIED EXPERIMENTS
Thank you for your submissions to REFORM Design Biennale 2020.
All entries are currently under review.
WITH THIS YEAR’S THEME ‘APPLIED EXPERIMENTS’
RE F O R M DESIGN BIENNALE 2020 AIMS TO EXPLORE HOW CREATIVE EXPERIMENTS CAN BE CARRIED OUT OUTSIDE THE CONVENTIONAL EXHIBITION FORMAT. HOW MIGHT OPEN ENDED EXPLORATIONS AND CRITICAL QUESTIONS MOVE SOCIETY, CITIZENS, COMPANIES, EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, ORGANISATIONS AND MORE?
REFORM is the process of change. A change of form. A change of mindset. A change of direction. We question what we already know and perceive as right. REFORM is a common ground and a movement for a new generation of creative practitioners who want to challenge traditional ways of activating objects, ideas and processes.
REFORM continually seeks to challenge traditional formats, and in 2020 we want to channel the experiment of reform into reality and into specific contexts. REFORM Design Biennale 2020 will not revolve around an exhibition. This year’s open call encourages applications outside the conventional exhibition format that bring visions and practices into public space, to the consumers, to people. REFORM and this year’s jury are looking for projects that can reform in a context – be it a location, a specific group of people, a certain conscience or at a media.
We expect to shortlist five to ten projects, which will be followed closely and further developed by REFORM, including feedback and discussion. The goal is to implement the projects during 2020 and to present the progress of the shortlisted projects in a publication and at a public event by the end of the year.
REFORM MMXX urge designers, architects, craftsmen and artists to rethink, explore and reform how projects can create change within a number of different areas.
PROCESS
Rethink the process from idea to end result. Invent new methods for production or creating. Learn from other sciences and knowledges. Explore how creative processes can be applied in the private or public sector as teaching, workshops, invitations for collaborations etc.
FUNCTION
Challenge function and use. Create new functions or rethink the existing. Examine the concept of function. Is functionality a fluid term? How can it be applied to public or digital spaces? Is the function communication as a website, documentary or podcast – or is it tangible and experienced as furnitures, objects or spaces?
MATERIAL
Experiment with material and the capacity of it. Invent new or question old. Revolutionize the inherent potential. Ponder how industry and society might evolve by applying your knowledge and experiments.
CONCEPT
Question the use of concepts. Wonder, provoke and search the boundaries of how ideas, experiments and craft can be put to use. Rethink how new tools, platforms, systems and grids can be applied in a physical, social or digital environment.
CONTEXT
To examine the potentials of creative experiments we need to move the projects out of the conventional exhibition format. We need to put things in context and to consider the circumstances that form the setting for the project.
DESIGNERS, ARCHITECTS, CRAFTSMEN, ARTISTS AND TALENTED STUDENTS COULD APPLY FOR RE F O R M. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS WAS MARCH 1, 2020.
